The Warmth of Helping Hands

Hi there,

This coming week will be the last week at work for a dear colleague of mine who is retiring. We have worked together since the first day I stepped into office and it's been 18 years! She has been very understanding and supportive. I know she's been looking forward to retirement and doing all those things she's always wanted to do but was unable to because of work (I'm envious!). Anyway, since she'll also be 'globe-trotting', I thought I'd make her these as a parting gift -- to thank her for all her help.
Now, those of us living in the tropics are probably unfamiliar with these...they're fingerless gloves...
I came across a pattern for these in a magazine and, recalling all those time where I've fumbled with camera buttons, handphone buttons, grasping small things ... while wearing full gloves, decided that these might be a useful item to make.

Here are some shots of my daughter 'modelling' the gloves (which are a little too big for her)...

After the 'photo shoot', my daughter asked for a pair for herself -- to bring on our vacation -- here are some 'on location' shots of her gloves, in a colour of her choice...

Can you guess where we went? If you look closely at the last photo, you probably can guess.

I'm afraid we are still in the midst of sorting out what seems like countless photos on top of the usual daily hustle & bustle....I'll definitely put up some when we're done ..promise...

Taking the longer route

Have you ever gotten off at the wrong stop, taken a wrong turn or perhaps misread directions, only to end up far away from your intended destination? Are you unsettled at moments like these? I usually am and often want nothing more than to retrace my steps or stop to check the map. If I'm too far off from where I wanted to explore in the first place, it's likely I'll abandon the plan, retrace my steps and take the safe route back to the starting point or to civilisation.

My husband and I took a ferry to Lamma Island, HongKong over the weekend, in search of the famed beancurd dessert and fresh seafood. It wasn't long before we discovered that in order to get to the recommended seafood stretch on Sok Ku Wan, we had to trek a good hour and a half from our landing point to the other side of the island. On top of that, it was raining.

Oh dear, we should have checked the ferry dropoff point more carefully before boarding I said, upset that we had rushed up without verifying which side of the island it was headed.
Walk so far in the rain, without proper shoes, no umbrella or ponchos... not a good idea, I thought, especially when I saw how prepared the locals were - armed for the outing with their brollies, towels and hiking shoes. Let's turn back, settle for the seafood restaurant near the pier (the only one with any customers actually, due to the lack of choice) so we can head back to the mainland in good time.
Who knows, the choices may be pretty much the same on the other side of the island and we'll be disappointed at having wasted time and effort.

But never one to balk at a challenge, hubby won me over with his enthusiasm.
We made a good trek of it (also a much needed exercise session for me!), all the way round to the other side of the island, trudging uphill (in the rain) at several points!

A little unplanned hike, a small step into the unknown but certainly a powerful reminder for me - that not everything in life can (or even should) be planned and executed accordingly.
It may be a good thing to detour sometimes, to take a risk instead of retreating to the familiar, comfortable or convenient when faced with choices...
what's more, mistakes can give us great experiences we may otherwise miss!

Who knows what one might discover at the end of the road...
Well in our case, there was an entire street of seafood restaurants with mouthwatering fare for us to choose from :)

Have you been doing much travelling this month with your family and loved ones?
We take such care to plan and record these journeys, don't we?
Often we also spare no expense in our efforts to make sure that everyone on the trip has the most unforgettable and complete experience.

But surely life's multitude of journeys needs more than a map, money and forward-planning?
With a constantly evolving itinerary, it takes courage to embrace new paths as they open before us.
Let's keep a grateful heart when faced with detours, and... remember to smile and take the hand of the person next to you when walking uphill in the rain!

Don't forget, Serena and I will be waiting for you with some of our handmade goodies, (above: sneak peek of my altered notebooks) tomorrow (Sunday 17th June) at Rochester Mall, 12 noon to 6pm! Do drop by and say hi to us!

Saturday 9 June 2012

Hi there,

My buddy Sheon & I are both out of town with our families, but we have't forgotten you!

I'm really thankful for being able to line up this post before I left. As to where I am right now -- well, I promise to share with the pictures when I'm back. Of course, I've brought along a crochet project...we'll do the reveal in the next few weeks ok?

Here is something I 'whipped up' for our flea stall mentioned here at Rochester Mall on Sunday 17th June only. As usual, I coudln't resist making a little 'tweak' to the design...did you notice it? (Yep, it's the shape of the shoe front..)
Do drop by and grab it if you like it!

Crafts to Go

There's nothing like a handmade card to express our well-wishes or appreciation for those who make our daily journeys a little more special or meaningful.
Even when we're a wee bit short of time, there are simple pieces we can make to bring a smile to those who've touched our lives.

Recently my workplace had a little send-off party for 3 young gentlemen who were temping with us for a couple of months. In the midst of a frenetic work week, I dashed off 3 'thank-you' cards in a flash, replicating a simple 'template' so that I could make them quickly, yet using different colours to add that personal touch for each receipient.
Black for mature and cool, Grey for steady and reliable, Bright Yellow for cheery and personable. Simple but straight from the heart.

Want to try your hand at some cards too? I've put together some DIY packs of birthday cards and all occasion cards for you to start off. Where to find them?

Guess what?
My talented crochet buddy Serena and I will be hanging out at the Twelfth Flea on Sunday, 17th June from 12 - 6pm at Rochester Mall
Do come on down and say hi to us!
There'll be delicately crocheted accessories, altered photo frames, altered notebooks and of course, my ready-made cards and DIY card packs!
AND... other pretty things we might dream up in the next couple of weeks... hope to see you there!
